Compact, lightweight, low-power smart material actuation systems are expected to play an emerging critical role in space operations, enabling reliable automation, autonomy, control authority, and adaptability of M2M missions. IDEAS2 Center investigates novel smart material actuation systems and soft robotic technologies for structure deployment, reconfiguration and control, health monitoring, docking/berthing, on-orbit servicing, and planetary exploration.
