Adaptive Space Systems

The NASA M2M campaign calls for the unsupervised operation of space systems, assets, and infrastructure to enable varying degrees of autonomy with enhanced capabilities, mission safety, and reliability. Reconfiguration, adaptation, and automated management and control processes and technologies enable space systems to adapt to changing conditions and optimize their performance and response independently from human or ground control. IDEAS2 examines novel adaptation, unsupervised health monitoring, and control methodologies and processes to facilitate space system autonomy, reliability, and robust functionality. Specific targeted areas include the autonomous deployment, configuration, and control of space structures, the robust control of spacecraft rendezvous and docking/berthing, and the autonomous detection of unexpected events in spacecraft subsystems.
